During
the 2007-08 Legislative Session, Members will be meeting
with small business associations, advocacy groups, and
local small business leaders. The Assembly Committee on
Jobs, Economic Development, and the Economy (JEDE) has
prepared this briefing memorandum to assist Members in their
discussions.

This briefing memorandum is divided into five main
sections. The first section provides background on
California small businesses. The second section includes
bills enacted last year and those currently under review.
The third section includes information on related oversight
hearings held during the 2005-2006 and the 2007-2008
Sessions. The fourth section provides an update on proposed
reforms to the California Enterprise Zone Program related to
small businesses. The fifth section includes information on
emerging domestic markets and the challenges that small and
emerging business face in accessing business capital.

New York, NY (BlackNews.com) - Steven Zacharius, Chief Executive Officer and President of Kensington Publishing Corp. announced today a joint publishing agreement between Kensington Publishing Corp. and Souls of My Sisters, Inc., which takes its name from the highly successful Essence Bestseller SOULS OF MY SISTERS: Black Women Break Their Silence, Tell Their Stories, and Heal Their Spirits, written and edited by Dawn Marie Daniels and Candace Sandy. That book was among the launch titles for Kensington's Dafina Books imprint in 2000 and is now in its 15th printing, with over 200,000 copies in print.

Daniels and Sandy are the principals of Souls of My Sisters, Inc., an entertainment-oriented company committed to presenting inspirational and empowering books for the African-American audience. Souls Of My Sisters, which struck a responsive chord that continues today, is an intimate look at the contributors' personal stories and the tools that enabled them to create success and find inner peace--women ranging from a former Blood gang member to celebrities such as Mary J. Bilge. Daniels, formerly an editor at Simon & Schuster, and Sandy, communications director for Congressman Gregory W. Meeks, D-NY also contributed to the book. Since its publication they have been honored with both the Amazing Women Award and the Golden Pen Award, presented by the National Black Writers Alliance.

Zacharius calls the Souls of My Sisters Books launch "part of our continuing commitment to readers who have helped us to grow and be responsive within our publishing program, especially our Dafina Books imprint. Souls of My Sisters Books, the imprint, launched this month with an update of Souls of My Sisters and the new Souls Revealed: A Souls of My Sisters Book of Revelations and Tools for Healing Your Life, Soul and Spirit with a foreword by Star Jones, presents reflections along with tips and prescriptive tools encouraging readers to discover their own place for inner healing. Plans call for four titles per year. Other projects include It Happened In Church: Stories of Humor from the Pulpit to the Pews written by Patti S. Webster with a foreword by Grammy Award winning Pastor Donnie McClurkin.

Sandy and Daniels will embark on a ten city tour entitled the Empower You Tour which launches during March Women's History month with locations including Norfolk, VA; Hanover, MD; Newark, NJ; Brooklyn, NY; Seattle, WA; Montclair, NJ; Sacramento, CA; Las Vegas, Nevada and Baltimore, MD. The two authors will also partner with the Women's Alliance and launch a teleseminar series for women transitioning from welfare to work.

Souls of My Sisters Books will publish a minimum of four titles per year, including one new book inspired by the original collection.
